The Diffuse knapweed is a biennial, or occasionally an annual, or short-lived perennial. It reproduces and spreads by seed. The flower color is usually white but may be purplish. The seeds germinate in the spring or fall. Seedlings develop and survive the first growing season as a rosette. The rosettes resume growth in the second spring. Diffuse knapweed will set seed in June or July and then die. All management techniques for this plant should occur before seed production. Land disturbance and soil left bare promote the invasion of diffuse knapweed.
