The Fremont County Commissioners received the "2007 Commissioner of the Year Award" from the Colorado Weed Management Association

Commissioner Michael J. Stiehl is a graduate of Colorado College, and Barrington, Illinois High School. He attended Michigan State University on a National Merit Scholarship and received a Bachelor's Degree in biology from Colorado College. Stiehl enjoys working with wood and old cars, and spending time outdoors. He's had plenty of work and community experience as well.

Mike was a Financial Advisor at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter for seven years and managed Hope Coronado Federal Credit Union for two years. In addition, he was a First Lieutenant for the United States Army, and a Commanding Officer. Mike has been a resident of Southern Colorado for 35 years, and has lived in Fremont County since 2001. Stiehl was a professional birdwatcher for the Division of Wildlife in 1977 and 1978, researching falcons and other birds of prey. From 1986 to 1989, Stiehl was chairman of the Woodland Park Planning Commission, and was the advance coordinator for the Andy Love governor campaign.

Mike has worked on statewide water issues since the early 1970's and has served on Governor's committees on land use in Colorado.

While writing a column for the local newspaper, it became clear to Stiehl that people felt their county government had a mind of its own and didn't pay attention to its citizens. As a result, Stiehl ran for county commissioner in 2004 and won the primary and general elections by a strong margin. He represents District 1 in the center of Fremont County. His favorite aspect of Fremont County is that it's the last remaining relatively unspoiled county along the Front Range.

The advice that has helped Stiehl the most is that "good government is good politics."
