James R. Schauer (R) served as a Fremont County Commissioner from 1997 to 2002 representing District 1. In 1998, 1999 and 2002, Jim served as Chairman of the Board.
Jim is a goal-oriented person. When asked what prompted him to run for County Commissioner, Jim simply replied, “It's just something I wanted to do.” His favorite aspect of being a County Commissioner is “trying to make things happen to everyone's satisfaction.” Jim's favorite attribute of Fremont County is the location and climate. Fremont County has fantastic weather year around. Jim says it's “just a great place to live.”
Various boards and commissions have had the privilege of Jim's service, including the Fremont Sanitation District for 12 years, the Fremont Economic Development Corporation for eight years and the Colorado Workforce Board.
Jim has been a resident of Fremont County for the past 38 years. He and his wife of 40 years, Katherine, have four children and four grandchildren. For the past 30 years, Jim has been involved in the business world. He was store manager of Montgomery Ward in Cañon City for 15 years. Following that job, Jim and his wife opened and operated a local television and appliance store for 15 years. Jim is an avid sports enthusiast. The advice that's helped Jim most in life is to “be honest to yourself and others."
